Youth sides to find out Elite Round opponents

Monday, 12 December 2016

Scotland’s Under-17 and Under-19 sides will find out their UEFA European Championship Elite Round opponents having both reached this stage for the fourth season in a row.

National youth team coach Scot Gemmill will be in Nyon, Switzerland for the draw to discover who his Under-17s side will face in their Elite Round which will take place before Sunday 2 April, 2017. The draw will be made at 10.45am (UK time).

This season’s under-17 finals will take place in Croatia between 3-19 May 2017 with the eight group winners and the seven runners-up joining the hosts.

The Under-17s are among top seeds for the draw based on their qualifying results and ranked sixth in Europe thanks to recent impressive results which has seen them qualify for the finals in each of the last three seasons.

Captained by Celtic forward Jack Aitchison, Scotland excelled in qualification to top their group, beating Malta, Wales and current Under-17 champions Portugal.

This season’s finals takes on added significance with it acting as a qualifying round for the FIFA Under-17 World Cup to be held in India in October 2017.

The Under-19s Elite Round draw is scheduled to take place at 10am where Scotland are fourth seeds.

The matches will be completed by Sunday 28 May, 2017 ahead of the Championships in Georgia between 2-15 July, 2017.

Led by Ricky Sbragia, this is the fifth consecutive year the Under-19s have reached the Elite Round stage.

In qualifying, the side captained by Rangers youth Ross McCrorie, overcame Andorra and Liechtenstein and they will be bidding to qualify from the Elite Round to make their first finals appearance since 2006, when the team reached the semi-finals.

Tomorrow the draws for the 2017/18 Qualifying Round will also take place for both the Under-17s and Under-19s.

The Under-17 qualifying draw is at 8am and the Under-19s will find out their opponents at 9am.
