Middleton out to make history with Scotland Under-17s

Thursday, 16 March 2017

NOTICE: Due to unforseen circumstances, Scotland's opening match with Montenegro will now take place at the Paisley 2021 Stadium, kick-off 7.30pm. Entry to the match is FREE.

At just 17-years old, Glenn Middleton has already made his mark at Norwich City and is determined to help Scotland reach a fourth successive UEFA European Under-17 Championship finals this week as the elite round qualifiers get under way.

The forward was handed a taste of life in the first team when he was named as a substitute against Southampton in an FA Cup replay earlier this month.

He features regularly for the Canaries’ under-23 side and has played at two European Under-17 Championship finals with his country having been selected for the finals in Bulgaria (2015) and Azerbaijan (2016).

Middleton, born in Shawlands, moved down to England at only eight-years old with his family and joined Norwich City four years later where he’s never looked back.

Fresh from signing a two-year deal at the start of the year, he’s brimming with confidence and joined up with the under-17 squad earlier this week ahead of their elite round as one of the most experienced members in the squad.

He is confident in the ability of the current crop of youngsters, who came through their qualification group unbeaten.

Scotland earned maximum points back in September, including wins over Wales and last year’s tournament winners Portugal, and Middleton is looking forward to playing in front a home crowd.

Scotland will take on Montenegro at the Paisley 2021 Stadium in their opening Elite Round match on Friday, kick-off 7.30pm, before facing Serbia at the same venue two days later.

They return to Paisley on Wednesday, 22 March where they will finish off their finals bid with a match against Switzerland.

“This is definitely the best team I’ve played in,” Middleton said.

“We seem to have strength in every position as well as depth. I think we’re capable of doing good things.

“The Portugal victory was awesome and just shows we’re capable of not only competing against nations like that but defeating them.

“Everyone sees the results but this is a chance for us to play in front of the public and show what we’re capable of.”

At Norwich, Middleton is in regular contact with Scotland defender Russell Martin and is using that as an incentive to move through the age groups within the Scotland set-up and achieve his goal of playing for the senior squad.

“At Norwich we’re fortunate that if we do well we get the chance to train with the first team,” he said.

“I’ve trained with them a few times and was in the squad for the FA Cup game against Southampton so I’ll be aiming to get more opportunities like that.

“I was really nervous on the bus but as the day went on I grew in confidence and although I didn’t get on it gave me a taste of being involved at that level.

“It’s been good having Russell Martin around. He’s the friendliest guy at the club and always chats to me.

“With the Scotland squad all the players know that if we can keep doing well then we know the senior team could call us up for a training session or something and that’s a massive incentive for us.”
