Match Preview: Scotland v Republic of Ireland

Friday, 07 July 2017

Scotland take on Republic of Ireland at Stark’s Park in their final match before Euro 2017 kicks off later this month.

The match will be an historic occasion as Anna Signeul manages her final match in Scotland before she leaves to join Finland after this summer’s tournament following 12 years in charge.

Another loyal servant to the national team will be honoured on the night as Gemma Fay looks set to make her 200th appearance for Scotland.

Fay made her debut for Scotland in 1998 against Czech Republic in Inverness and has been a squad staple ever since.

The match is Scotland’s 10th this year, against the side ranked 33rd in the world.

Scotland team news

Rachel Corsie, Kirsty Smith and Jo Love are all doubtful for the match through niggling injuries but everyone else is fully fit.

Ireland team news

Republic of Ireland striker Stephanie Roche has missed the trip to Scotland due to a hamstring injury.

Goalkeeper Emma Byrne also misses the fixture due to educational commitments so young prospect Amanda McQuillan from Shelbourne Ladies comes into the squad with Manchester City goalkeeper Marie Hourihan set to start.

What Anna says

“Preparation has gone really well for the game. I’m really pleased with how things have gone so far but I’m sad for the players who aren’t here through injury as they’ve played such a large part as well.

“I think we’ll use this game to refine our tactics as well as give a few players some game time as we have some people who haven’t played much recently.”

“Gemma Fay could make her 200th cap tonight which is absolutely fantastic.

"She has invested 19 years of her life in the national team.

“She has been so committed and deserves to reach 200 caps. She has made a lot of sacrifices to juggle playing football and a full-time job.

"Gemma is a brilliant leader and has contributed so much to Scottish women's sport."

Gemma’s thoughts on potentially reaching 200 caps

“I am incredibly proud of playing so many times for my country and hopefully I make my 200th cap.

“Over the past few weeks I’ve been reflecting on my career so far and what it’s taken to get to this point.

“So many people have helped me along the way and pushed me in the right direction. There have been so many highs and lows over the last 19 years and it’s pretty surreal to be approaching 200 caps and very humbling as well.

“My first cap was against Czech Republic and we drew 1-1. It was in Inverness and I was 16. We were in the ‘B’ Division and aiming to be promoted.

“Czech Republic needed that draw and they were celebrating like they’d won the World Cup after the game as it meant we needed to beat Lithuania 17-0 at Scotstoun to get to the play-offs. But we did! Julie Fleeting scored in the last minute. It was a pretty miraculous turnaround.

“You can’t compare where the national team is at now when you look back on those days.”

Match admission

Tickets can be bought at Stark’s Park tonight for £5 for adults and £2 for concessions.

SSC Members will be given free entry. Membership cards must be shown.

Match programme

A 20 page programme will be available free of charge on the night featuring interviews with Gemma Fay, Christie Murray and Lisa Evans while Jo Love lifts the lids on the dressing room and talks about her team mates.

Broadcast

The match is live on BBC ALBA, kick-off 7.30pm.
