Euro 2017 Tournament Preview

Tonight Euro 2017 will begin as hosts Netherlands take on Norway in what is a historic tournament for Scotland.

 

Anna Signeul’s team navigated their way through the qualification group to secure a place at their first major finals and Scotland’s first for 19 years.

 

Holders Germany go into the tournament as one of the favourites having lifted the trophy in eight of the last nine European Championships.

 

Where is the tournament going to be played?

 

There will be 31 matches involving 16 teams, played across the Netherlands in Bredam, Deventer, Doetinchem, Enschede, Rotterdam, Tilburg and Utrecht.

How have Scotland fared against their opposition before?

 

England

 

Scotland have beaten England twice before. The first came in May 1977, a 2-1 success in Dundee (a week before a famous Scottish men's win at Wembley) and then a 2-0 success in March 2011 in the Cyprus Women's Cup.

 

Their last encounter was their only draw, 4-4 in the 2013 Cyprus Women's Cup.

 

Portugal

 

Including friendlies Scotland have won five, drawing two and losing two against the Portuguese. 

 

The goal count is 23-16 in Scotland's favour.

 

Spain

 

Spain have won three times and drawn once in the four occasions they’ve faced Scotland and come into competition on form after recording a 7-0 win over Belgium in their Euro preparation. 

 

Where can supporters watch the matches?

 

Scotland’s matches will be broadcast by Channel 4 with a stellar line-up including Clare Balding, Lee McKenzie, Kim Little, Kelly Smith, Michael Owen and Jermaine Jenas bringing the coverage live.

 

The matches will be also coverage extensively across the Scottish FA’s media channels and selected tournament games will also shown on Eurosport.

 

Where are the fan zones?

 

With events across Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen there will be bouncy castles, football challenges, music and entertainment to get the young stars of the future and their families into the EURO 2017 spirit!
