Toulon Tournament 2017
Scotland 0-3 England
Tuesday, 8 June 2017, kick-off 5pm (local time)
Stade Parsemain, France
Barnes (8, 69), Embleton (50)
Scotland’s hopes of winning this year’s Toulon Tournament are over after they lost 3-0 to England in their semi-final clash this afternoon.
Harvey Barnes hit a brace in between an Elliot Embleton strike to ensure it was England who advanced to this year’s final, meaning Scotland will contest the third/fourth place play-off on Saturday afternoon against Czech Republic.
Skipper Oliver Burke returned to the starting 11 after missing the 2-1 win over Indonesia two days ago whilst 17-year-old Reading midfielder Jordan Holsgrove made his first start.
England came into the match following three days' rest versus Scotland’s one but Scot Gemmill’s side started the game strongly and the defence settled well.
However, England delivered a serious blow to Scotland’s chances after almost 10 minutes when Leicester City midfielder Harvey Barnes picked up a loose ball inside the Scotland half before advance forward and dispatching a low shot beyond Jack Ruddy.
Scotland responded shortly before the break when Oliver Burke rifled a low cross along the face of the England goal but there were no takers in blue.
Adam Frizzell then had an effort saved by the goalkeeper as the Scots tried to get back into the match.
England, however, doubled their lead early in the second half after pouncing on some loose defending before firing home through Elliot Embleton.
Barnes then grabbed his second and England’s third almost 10 minutes from time with a low curling shot beyond Ruddy.
Ryan Hardie almost pulled one back for Scotland after 72 minutes when he rose highest to get on the end of a Tony Ralston cross but his header was stopped by Ryan Schofield.
The loss means Scotland will contest the third/fourth play-off against their Czech Republic counterparts on Saturday at 2pm (UK time) as they aim to finish this year's tournament on a high note.
