FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Qualifiers
Austria v Scotland
Tuesday, 7 September 2021, kick-off 7.45pm (UK time)
Ernst Happel Stadion, Wien, Austria
Scotland conclude September’s triple header with an away clash against Austria on Tuesday night.
After a 1-0 victory against Moldova at a buoyant Hampden Park on Saturday, Steve Clarke’s men aim to wrap up the international window on a high against a difficult opponent.
The Austrians will also be keen to end the window well, following a disappointing and dramatic 5-3 defeat at the hands of Israel in their last match.
Team News
Manager Steve Clarke was forced to withdraw captain Andy Robertson from the action earlier than expected after the Liverpool man sustained a knock in the second half, but the newly inducted member to the Scotland Roll of Honour is expected to be fully fit for the trip to Vienna after notching his 50th cap.
Clarke was boosted by the return of John McGinn, Stephen O’Donnell, Kevin Nisbet and Nathan Patterson at the weekend, with both the Hibs forward and the Rangers youngster playing pivotal roles in Lyndon Dykes deciding goal against the Moldovans.
James Forrest, Greg Taylor and Stuart Armstrong have all withdrawn from the originally named squad due to injury.
Previous Meeting
The two sides previously met back in March in the opening fixture of World Cup qualification, ending in a 2-2 draw.
A Grant Hanley header and a stunning overhead kick from John McGinn ensured the Scots battled from behind twice to grab a point at Hampden.
Pre-Match Thoughts
Skipper Andy Robertson is fully expecting Austria to be eager to bounce back from their defeat against Israel on Saturday.
He said: “Austria will be hurting after their result on Saturday, just like we were after losing to Denmark, any time you get beat you want to try and put it right.
“On the international stage you only have a matter of days to turn your attention to the next game. We know Austria will be focused and ready for us so it’s important that we are focused and ready for them.”
The 27-year-old admits that the team will need to show a cutting edge against a difficult opponent in the Austrians, but insists that three points is the most important thing in what is a busy international break.
“We’ll need to start well and when we get our chances we’ll need to be more clinical than we were against Moldova,” he said. “Fingers crossed we can do that.
“The main thing in a busy international period is ensuring you rest right and recover. It’s still early in the season and some of the boys were tiring at points, especially with the likes of McGinn and Patterson only just coming back from Covid.”
