FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Qualifiers
Scotland v Moldova
Saturday, 4 September 2021, kick-off 7.45pm
Hampden Park, Glasgow
Scotland face Moldova at Hampden Park on Saturday night, with no limit on the number of supporters allowed in attendance for the first time in over 18 months.
Following Wednesday night’s defeat at the hands of Denmark, Steve Clarke and his players will be eager to bounce back with a home tie against Moldova, who currently occupy bottom spot in Group F.
Skipper Andy Robertson admitted that the Scots had to weather a Danish storm in Copenhagen, the top seeded side in the group.
"Unfortunately we found ourselves two goals down and second-half we went out to try and stamp our authority on the game,” he said. “I felt we did that at times but Denmark were always in control and that's the disappointing thing.
"We knew they'd try and get off to fast start in front of a big crowd after a fantastic Euros. Our aim was to quieten everything down and settle into the game.
"We didn't manage that and when you find yourself 2-0 down against a really good team it's an uphill battle and we just didn't have enough unfortunately."
Team News
Manager Steve Clarke will hope to be boosted by the return of a number of personnel after his squad was hit by a number of Covid call-offs.
John McGinn, Stephen O’Donnell, Kevin Nisbet and Nathan Patterson could all be available again having missed out on the trip to Copenhagen.
Scott McTominay, James Forrest, Greg Taylor and Stuart Armstrong are all out of action.
Previous meetings
Saturday marks the first meeting between Scotland and Moldova since June 2005.
Christian Dailly put Walter Smith’s side 1-0 up early in the second half, before James McFadden added a late second to secure all three points and keep Scotland’s World Cup’s qualification hopes alive having collected just two points from the first four games of the group.
Pre-match thoughts
Clarke is well aware that Denmark away was always going to be the hardest match in the group.
With two important games remaining in September’s triple-header, the manager believes it is all to play for.
“We are still in the group, no problem. We have a tough game at home at the weekend against Moldova, if we get three points there we will look forward to Austria away. But the first focus is Saturday. We must get the three points.”
“No one wants to lose,” he added. “I am disappointed and the players are disappointed but we will dust ourselves down and try and get the three points that we need on Saturday.
“Hopefully Kevin Nisbet, Stephen O’Donnell, John McGinn and Nathan Patterson will join the squad again. Hopefully they are fit and well, they have been isolating so we will see how their fitness is.”
