Jane Ross made history this afternoon as she conducted the first ever draw for the new Women's Scottish Cup at Hampden Park.

The Scotland Women's National Team international joined draw host Gordon Duncan as she made the draw for the Preliminary Round of the Scottish FA's new competition.

The ambitious national cup competition was announced last month, as the latest step in the governing body’s bespoke women's football strategy, Accelerate Our Game, launched in 2021.

Both the Semi-Finals and Final will be played at Hampden Park in 2023.

Six ties were confirmed to make up the Preliminary Round, with the remaining 10 teams receiving byes into the hat for the First Round.

Speaking after the draw Ross, who has 62 goals from 146 Scotland caps, said: “It’s obviously great to see the growth of the women’s game, with this new tournament pushing the game forward and I’m sure it’s going to an exciting season.

“I think for any Scottish player you want to be playing at Hampden so for all players in the leagues they now have that opportunity as well, and it’s a motivating factor for getting to the latter stages of the tournament.

“Since my return to Scotland a year ago I’ve definitely seen a large improvement and the game is definitely moving forward.

“Every year it seems to be growing and growing so I think it’s only going to keep pushing that way – it’s an exciting time."

After winning the league with Rangers last year, Ross suffered a serious knee injury in a pre-season friendly against Spartans in July.

She is likely to miss a large portion of the season, but still has the dream of playing at Hampden Park with Rangers and the possibility of a World Cup appearance with Scotland - with both serving as motivation in her recovery.

She said: “It’s obviously a gutting one to take and for any player who has done it it’s a frustrating one but I have the inspiration of so many who have gone through the injury before.

“I know it’s a long journey ahead but I have belief that I’ll get back from it.

“I’ve obviously set goals to be back for certain times but I think the process of the rehab means that you have to just take it step by step so I’ll be doing that.

"Hopefully I might have a cup final and World Cup to be available for at the end of the season but we’ll take it all as it comes.”

The Preliminary Round ties will take place on Sunday, 11 September.
