Scotland v Norway
Sunday, 18 June, 11am kick off (UK time)
Estadio Nueva Condomina, Murcia

Scotland Under-21s round off their Spain training camp on Sunday with a second friendly against Norway in Murcia.

Scot Gemmill's side drew 0-0 against the same opposition on Thursday.

With Norway ranked similarly to Scotland at this level, it was always going to be a good examination for the young Scots.

Norway edged a low-key first half and Cieran Slicker was forced to make two strong saves but Scotland were dominant after the break and substitute Dire Mebude was inches away from scoring the winner at the death as his shot came back off the post.

This match will represent Scotland's last friendly before the Euro 2025 qualifiers begin with a match against Spain in September.

Team News

Gemmill has a full squad to choose from as all 20 players who featured against Norway came through unscathed.

Leon King came off towards the end of Thursday's match but he has trained normally and will be in contention to feature once again.

All nine outfield substitutes featured on Thursday and it is likely that Gemmill will utilise his bench again, with many players playing matches for the first time in over a month.

Pre-match thoughts

A regular throughout the age groups, Connor Smith has been an ever-present for Scotland Under-21s since making his debut against Turkey in March 2022.

He has featured in Scotland's last seven matches and he spoke to us about being one of the more senior members in a young group.

Connor - we're now on day six of the camp out here in Spain. It seems to have been a productive week so far with a good intensity in training and a positive performance on Thursday. How have you found it?

It's always nice to come away in the sun and the weather has been brilliant for us. It's been good to get everyone back together. Obviously we're just looking forward to the qualifiers and friendlies are what you need to do to prepare. Boys have had their holidays but they know that they need to do theirs runs to tick over. People should want to come away with Scotland - it's not a chore it's your job and everyone has come here with the right attitude towards football.

Just looking back to Thursday's match in particular, how do you assess the performance?

I was watching it on the sidelines in the first half. I don't think we were poor but Norway were just a good side. We made a few changes and we were the better team in the second half. It's hard in the heat and especially when boys haven't played for a while but now that we've settled into this heat I think Sunday will be a better game.

From a personal point of view, you've racked up around 30 appearances for Scotland throughout the age groups. Is it still a buzz to get selected eveytime?

There's nothing better. You're waiting to find out when the squad comes out, I'm always checking my emails or if you see it on Twitter it's always a privilege to get called up at any group and everyone's goal is to get to the first team.

You're the only player in the squad who has played the last seven matches for the Under-21s. How does it feel now being one of the more senior members of this squad?

I'm one of the older ones now so I want to get as many games as possible but it's always good to see the younger ones come in at only 18 years old as well.

I feel the likes of me, Connor Barron, Josh Mulligan who have been in the squad for a while, we need to help the younger boys. It's hard to come out of your shell but they've all been good.

I've been on five loans so I'm used to being the youngest so I know what it feels like and I think I can help the young ones which is what I try to do.

It was an interesting season for you with B-team football, first-team football with Hearts and also a loan spell. How do you reflect on it?

I played in Europe which I was buzzing about and then I came off the bench in a few games and started in a few games but then I went through a spell when I wasn't getting on so I went on loan to Hamilton.

When you're on the bench your confidence goes down so to get the call from John Rankin to say 'you'll play every game' - it's good reassurance.

I scored goals and got assists and we were unlucky with how it ended at Hamilton. It was a rollercoaster season.

Playing in Europe for Hearts at such a young age must have been a career highlight?

I said to my dad, when I was 17 or 18, I couldn't have dreamed of playing in Europe in the next few years. To start one of the games against the team Mezut Ozil played for was amazing and to come on at half-time against Fiorentina was special and the fans were class. That was one of the highlights of my life, never mind this season.

You touch on your dad - how big an influence have your family been on your career so far?

My mum and dad have been amazing for me through the years. When I was young there was a period when I trained with a couple of teams including Hearts and Celtic. I remember in particular, my mum picking me up from school and taking me to Lennoxtown and we wouldn't get back until 11 o'clock at night. They've been brilliant for me all my life and now playing for Scotland they're buzzing about that.

Now I just want to keep developing and one day play for the A team - that would make them so proud. I remember watching Scotland games when I was younger and my pals joked 'that'll be you when you're older' but now that you're in the Under-21s and you're getting closer, there's a feeling like 'that could be me'.

Finally, just looking ahead to Sunday. I imagine the aim is to maintain the solidity but create a few more chance?

I think we've been solid defensively as you say. If we keep that up, we have the right players in the team to go and win the game and create chances. Dire was unlucky at the end on Thursday but we've got players in the team who can create that bit of magic if we keep defensively strong I think we can go and win the game on Sunday.
