2023 FIFA Women's World Cup Play-off Second Round
Scotland v Republic of Ireland

Tuesday, 11 October (8:00pm)
Hampden Park, Glasgow

The scene is set at Hampden Park for another historic night on Tuesday, as Scotland host Republic of Ireland in a play-off match ahead of next summer's FIFA Women's World Cup.

A win could secure automatic qualification for next year’s tournament, depending on results elsewhere. Victories for Portugal or Wales against Iceland or Switzerland respectively could seal qualification for the Scots. However, a trip to Australia or New Zealand in February to take part in an inter-continental play-off could also be a possibility if Scotland win and Portugal or Wales lose.

Pedro Martinez Losa’s side go into the match in good form with a hard-fought 1-0 win against Austria last week, a 4-0 victory against Ukraine and a 6-0 win over the Faroe Islands in our last three competitive outings.

Scotland came through last week’s first round play-off with no injury concerns for the 25-strong squad.

More than 10,000 fans watched on as Abi Harrison headed the ball home in injury time against Austria to secure Scotland’s place in Tuesday’s fixture, breaking the attendance record for a competitive match. With a place at another major tournament at stake, you can still secure your tickets to roar the team to victory - available to buy here.

Pre-match thoughts

Midfielder Chloe Arthur was a substitute the last time Scotland faced Republic of Ireland. Scotland ran out 1-0 winners at Starks Park in Kirkcaldy thanks to a Christie Murray header in the 85th minute. The fixture was the final warm-up match before Scotland departed for UEFA Women’s EURO 2017.

"It was our first major tournament, obviously we were full of excitement going into it and you don’t really know what to expect.

“There was such a buzz that we had qualified and getting to the tournament was a learning experience as well. It gives you that hunger to want more.

“Each tournament you learn more and more and as a team you bond more - you learn what these tournaments are all about.

“Obviously with being at the World Cup now we know what it takes. We know we have the capability to do well.

“Ireland are always a tough team. They always have that hunger and desire to qualify for more tournaments too.

“They’re a quality team with players in lots of different leagues so it’s always a tough game. I think going into matches with them we know it’s always a battle no matter what and it can come down to whoever wants it more.

“They’ll be up for it as much as we are because these games are very important – they’re obviously knock-out so you have to win. We have to get the job done.”

You can hear more from the Crystal Palace midfielder in Tuesday's matchday programme.
