Scott McTominay has been crowned EE Scotland Men’s Player of the Year 2023.
The all-action midfielder edged out team-mates Andy Robertson, Angus Gunn, Callum McGregor, John McGinn and Ryan Porteous in the supporter-led vote.
His seven goals in qualifying played a big part in securing our place at UEFA EURO 2024 this summer.
The presentation took place at Manchester United’s Carrington training ground this week, with one very special Scotland supporter on hand to do the honours.
Former Scotland captain Darren Fletcher needs no introduction – with 80 caps and five goals to his name over a distinguished international career – but he also has a personal interest in McTominay’s personal progress as United’s Technical Director.
McTominay also considers him a trusted mentor, who has helped him navigate the ups and downs of life with one of the world’s biggest clubs.
On presenting the trophy, Fletcher said: “You thoroughly deserve it.
“You, the players, and the manager have had a fantastic season, with back-to-back Euros, and we’re looking forward to the summer.
“As a fellow Scotland player and captain, massive congratulations.”

McTominay is the first to point out that any achievement has been a collective one and added: “It’s a big honour and we’ve had a great year.
“To win something like this is amazing. We’ve had a good season in terms of the results and getting to the Euros. Now we want to kick on.
“We all contributed equally to get here. I’m the fortunate one who’s got this award, but it comes down to everyone. It’s a collective in terms of that spirit and banter in the squad.”
For all the highlights, it’s still one bad break that’s at the forefront of his mind.
“Obviously I had the goal in Spain that was disallowed. It’s my favourite goal that I haven’t scored!
“The other two goals against Spain stick out. That was a historic night for us, and we want more like that in the future, when we can show we’re capable of beating teams as good as them.”
McTominay is part of the squad who will take on The Netherlands and Northern Ireland this month, as preparations for the Euros intensify.
Like the rest of the squad, he’s not getting ahead of himself.
“We’ll just take it game by game. It’s cliched but that’s all you can do in football. We want to keep improving and show that we can do some good things in the Euros.”
