Team News

Goalkeeper Angus Gunn and centre-back Dom Hyam were two new faces in the Scotland camp this week as they both received their first call-ups. Angus, who is the son of former Scotland shot-stopper Bryan, made his Scotland debut as he started in between the sticks for the opening game in the Scots UEFA EURO 2024 qualification campaign.

Callum McGregor won his 50th cap for Scotland and will join our Scotland International Roll of Honour.

As It Happened

In a packed out Hampden Park, the national anthems of both teams kicked off our UEFA EURO 2024 Group A qualification campaign.

Scotland opened the scoring with 21 minutes on the clock when Captain Andy Robertson received the ball on the left and advanced into the Cyprus box before crossing it to Super John McGinn at the back post area who tapped it home. The celebrations were briefly halted as a VAR check took place for a potential offside against the Scotland captain, however the check was complete and the goal stood – Hampden Park erupted once again.

Scotland nearly doubled their lead just before half time thanks to great link up play between ChΓ© Adams and John McGinn however the forwards effort was denied by a finger tip save over the crossbar from the Cyprus goalkeeper.

At the 65 minute mark, the Scotland Skipper came close to scoring when he received the ball out wide on the left from Stuart Armstrong before driving into the box however his effort rolled across the six-yard box and narrowly past the right hand post. A few minutes later, a flurry of Scotland shots in the box were denied. Lyndon Dykes held the ball up and laid it back to Ryan Christie whose shot was blocked before the effort at the rebound from Scott McTominay was also blocked.

Scotland got their second goal a few minutes before the end, with three substitutes combining. Lyndon Dykes got on the end of a Ryan Christie cross to head the ball into the path of Scott McTominay, who took a touch before rifling the ball into the back of the net from six yards out.

McTominay scored again deep into stoppage time when he received a short pass from Andy Robertson inside the box and fired the ball into the back of the net, rounding off a great afternoon for Scotland.
