Vauxhall International Challenge Match
Scotland vs. Netherlands
Thursday 20 October 2016, kick-off 7pm
Tony Macaroni Arena, Livingston
Scotland’s first match following their qualification for the Euro 2017 ended with a 7-0 defeat to the hands of tournament hosts, Netherlands.
The visitors scored two late first-half goals to lead 3-0 at the break before scoring a further four in the second half, defeating an inexperienced Scotland team who were without a number of key players such as Rachel Corsie, Kim Little and Jenny Beattie.
Shannon Lynn started the game in goals, making her 17th cap and made some solid stops in the first 20 minutes which was fairly even but the visitors managed some snap shots and the 30-year-old was equal to them.
With 23 minutes on the clock Lineth Beerensteyn left Lynn rooted to the spot but her looping shot sailed just beyond the upright.
Scotland’s goalkeeper then had to pick the ball out the back of the net after half an hour when star striker Vivianne Miedema unleashed a ferocious drive from the edge of the area and, through a fortunate deflection, the ball rocketed into the net.
Before the break, Jane Ross had a golden chance when she slipped the ball beyond the Netherlands defender, wrong footing her, but then proceeded to put her shot over the bar.
Scotland were left to rue that miss when Beerensteyn raced through on goal beating Dieke for pace and shooting into the net.
Moments before the half-time whistle Scotland were three down when Miedema scored a second knocking home the rebound after a shot from outside the box hit the crossbar.
The second half started quietly but with 60 minutes on the clock Netherlands notched their fourth and began to really take control of the game.
Renee Slegers scored after good work by van de Sanden down the wing.
Netherlands soon scored their fifth from a rebound following a Shannon Lynn save.
Lynn went off injured, replaced by Fay, whose first job was to pick the ball out the back of the net. Netherlands then made it seven when Groenen turned well in the box and slammed beyond Fay.
