Luxembourg v Scotland
Sunday 6 June 2021, kick-off 5pm (UK time)
Stade Josy Barthel, Luxembourg

On Sunday night Scotland will play Luxembourg in their final match before Scotland’s EURO 2020 journey kicks-off on Monday, 14 June.

The match will conclude a 10 day camp in La Finca, Spain, including a promising 2-2 draw against the Netherlands on Wednesday night in Algarve.

On 27 May, Scotland travelled out to Spain and since then they’ve been enjoying the Spanish sunshine, breaking up hard training sessions with socially distant coffees and rounds of golf.

On Sunday they aim to end the camp on a high against an international side who have been in good form of late.

Team News

Billy Gilmour and Scott McTominay are in contention for selection, after flying out just before the Netherlands match. While Gilmour will be aiming to build on his second cap, John Fleck remains out after testing positive for COVID-19.

Nathan Patterson will also be in the squad and will be looking to gain his first cap, following on from Turnbull’s debut against Netherlands.

Opposition focus

Ranked 96 in the world, Luxembourg have played Scotland on four occasions; Scotland have won three times and drawn once.

On Wednesday Luxembourg lost 1-0 to Norway with an Erling Haaland goal in the last minute proving to be the difference. In March, Luxembourg also made all the headlines when they defeated Republic of Ireland 1-0.

The last time Scotland played Sunday night’s opponents was in 2012, winning 2-1 where a Jordan Rhodes double secured the win. Billy Stark was in interim charge that night and Grant Hanley was the only player in the current squad who was involved that night.

Pre-match thoughts

Billy Gilmour sat down to discuss his whirlwind week which has involved the 19-year-old winning the Champions League and gaining his first Scotland call-up, against the Netherlands.

He said: “It was amazing to come on on Wednesday. I was told to go and warm up and come on for the last ten minutes or so. I hadn’t even trained with the first team before that, so the gaffer just said I would be on the bench and hopefully get some minutes. Ever since going to the Performance School my main aim was to get into the Scotland team. And now I have done it I am so proud.”

Reflecting on the week as a whole, he said: “It’s incredible, I mean, what a week it has been. I made my debut for my country and winning one of the biggest trophies in the world. That was amazing, just the full night, the full experience, to be a part of it. It was crazy. It was a good party. My family came over to that as well and I got to get them on the pitch and have pictures taken with the trophy. The celebrations were good.”

Gilmour has now settled into camp and is enjoying the atmosphere in camp, being reunited with fellow Scottish FA JD Performance School graduate Nathan Patterson.

“The first few days have been really good. I’m a couple of training sessions now in focussing on Luxembourg and the boys have been very good, welcomed me very well. It’s a good group, everyone’s together, there’s no different groups and stuff so it’s really good to see. It’s good to see Nathan, I’ve not seen him since he’s been at Rangers, so for us to come together, we’ve been through Rangers youth together, Scotland, and now to be in the first team is amazing.”
