Scotland will face Ukraine, Republic of Ireland and Armenia in the 2022 UEFA Nations League following this evening’s draw.

Steve Clarke’s side were placed as second seeds in Group B1 at this evening’s draw in Nyon, Switzerland.

After winning their group in the inaugural UEFA Nations League in 2018 and securing a place in the UEFA EURO 2020 play-offs, the competition was integral in Scotland’s qualification for the nation’s first appearance at a major men’s tournament finals in 23 years.

Prior to tonight’s draw Scotland already had a date with Ukraine in the diary, with the two nations set to meet in the vital FIFA World Cup play-off semi-final at Hampden in March.

The sides have only met twice before, with one win apiece during qualification for UEFA EURO 2008.

The Republic of Ireland also share a delicately balanced record in their previous meetings with Scotland, with four wins apiece and three draws. The two sides last met in qualification for UEFA EURO 2016, with Shaun Maloney’s memorable strike giving Scotland victory in Glasgow before they played out a 1-1 draw in Dublin.

Armenia represent something of a step into the unknown for Scotland, with the nations having never met before. Armenia have performed well in recent years, taking four points from six against Iceland and beating Romania in their qualification group for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Reaction

Speaking after the draw, Scotland Head Coach Steve Clarke reflected:

"When you’re in a draw with teams of the same level you’re going to expect three difficult opponents. That’s what we got. It’s a good draw. The games against the Republic of Ireland will always be good for the supporters and hopefully we can make them good on the pitch for both sets of fans."

"Obviously we have Ukraine in the World Cup play-offs. We will know them well by the end of the Nations League, we will have played them three times. Hopefully we find a way to beat them three times."

"Armenia is a new one, Scotland haven’t played them before so a first for Scotland and a first for Armenia. They are a relatively new nation and have had a couple of good results. They beat Romania and Iceland, so they are a decent team. Obviously the headline player for them will be Mkhitaryan who was at Arsenal and Man United, now at Roma."

So, three good opponents and something to look forward to in the summer."

Speaking about having the backing of Scotland fans, Steve commented:

"The travelling Scotland supporters are important for the team. The tartan army when they are there in their full voice and supporting the lads make a difference. Hopefully we can get good home crowds as well."

"The last two matches at Hampden with the full houses have been magnificent. So let’s see if we can get a few in at Hampden as well."
