Scotland's Under-17 EURO 2023 elite round qualifiers kick off on Wednesday with Brian McLaughlin's side aiming to secure back to back appearances at the finals.

After reaching the EURO 2022 Under-17 Championships in Israel last year, the young Scots will be looking to repeat the feat in Wales over the next seven days.

They kick off their campaign with a match against hosts Wales before playing Montenegro and Iceland.

Team News

Scotland's forward line has suffered a double blow with Rory Wilson and Alfie Bavidge being ruled out, while Gabriel Forsyth has also been withdrawn.

Ewan Simpson and Daniel Cummings have been called up in their place.

Pre-match thoughts

We caught up with midfielder Lennon Miller ahead of Wednesday's opener against Wales.

Lennon - you were part of the squad who reached last year's finals. What was that experience like?

That’s what you want to do as a footballer, you want to test yourself against the best. Even to be one of the younger ones playing in it made it an even better experience. Learning from the older ones who had played in big games already. We did and fell short but we’re hoping to redeem ourselves this year.

Scotland were the youngest team at last year's finals so a lot of the squad have been together for a while. Do you think that helps?

Definitely. We’re a tight-knit group. Most of us have been here with Brian (McLaughlin) last year as well which was an amazing experience and it will stand us in good stead for this week.

It helps being together so long because we know what movements people are going to make, how people play and it’s only going to be a benefit for the result.

To someone who hasn't watched you play before, how would you describe your style of play and which players do you look up to?

I’m a box to box midfielder who enjoys the ball at his feet. Jude Bellingham is a player I enjoy but I like watching home-grown talents like Callum McGregor and Billy Gilmour.

Your dad, Lee Miller, was capped for Scotland at senior level. Do you think he has helped instil in you a pride at representing your country?

It’s always there. It reminds you how proud you should be to play for your country in these qualifiers and the finals. He’s got his caps in the house and he’s got a few pictures. It’s inspiring. They sit in the games room and when I’m playing darts and table tennis it’s there as a reminder.

The experience he has playing first team football and some of the dressing rooms he’s been a part of means he can give really good advice. He’s coming down for the Montenegro game.

You have had a breakthrough season at club level, making your senior debut for Motherwell. What was that like?

I made my debut in League Cup in August and I made my league debut in December against Rangers at Ibrox. There’s always nerves and it’s added by being at Ibrox and being a full house but I just tried to relax myself and be in the moment.

I understand that you scored a special goal on your Scotland debut. Talk us through that.

It was Under-16s. My international debut, was a great experience being around St George's Park and then to score was unbelievable. Such a proud moment. It was the second half and I saw the goalkeeper off his line and went for it from kick off. It won Scotland Goal of the Year so that was pretty amazing.

Finally, how has this week been so far and what do you expect from the matches?

It’s been a brilliant first few days. Confidence is through the roof. It always is when you play with Scotland. It’s the best players from your country.

We know it’s going to be tough matches. International games are always tough but we believe in ourselves.
